freeGeoIP API is deprecated / Station's hitting an endpoint that returns a redirect in a loop

✅released

(Carlos Honig) #1

The issue I’m facing is:
infinite request being sent to freegeoip.net and never getting a response.
Read https://github.com/apilayer/freegeoip#readme

Here’s the detailed report

  • Trigger: Open Station
  • Issue: Requests to old API flooding connection logs
  • Explanatory gifs/pictures (we really need that  ):
  • OS version: Windows 10
  • Station version: 1.21.0

Station is hitting an endpoint doing that returns a redirect in a loop

:writing_hand:Brief description of the issue

I was looking at my wireshark output and found an intermitent call to an endpoint
image
I did some research with nettop
sudo nettop -m tcp
And found it was station hitting it
image
You will notice the same IP in both logs.
Maybe thats adding to the high CPU usage from station.
If you want to know this is the response from endpoint in question: freegeoip.net

Looks like station or some app is trying to geolocate me

This has been fixed in Station 1.24.0. We are now using an other GeoIP service. Thanks!
